Uncertainty

Image
Our life is full of ups and downs, twists and  turns no less than a popular daily soap on television. Many times we all wished if only we knew what is to happen in future - things could have been better. A time when there was something as little as an unexpected rain to something that could be life changing like someone's unprecedented illness, etc we have wished that only if we knew it. Knowing something in advance is to be certain about something. If we believe in the Almighty - that is we believe that there is some power which governs us all, then we have also known through various stories and folklores that this power has always prevented us from knowing the future. If he is our creator and the birth giver of this entire universe, we must be sure that he cannot do anything against our good. So then, why this restriction? There are many stories about this. One in which, when God completed making his best creation- Man, he was so happy that he asked Man to ask for a boon. As gree...

Music

Image
Words may not be enough to speak about this universal language - MUSIC. Not exaggerated, it is a medium of connection between all living beings even plants. There have been experiments providing proofs of plants growing better and patients healing faster with this magic called music. Not only physical but music has an effect mentally, emotionally and even spiritually. May be that's why when humans tried to connect with the Almighty sang hymns and prayers. What more can one ask for from this magical potion that nourishes mind, body and soul. Often one has observed that when sad you feel to listen to music that matches your sadness, and when happy, we switch to joyful ones. However, if you wish to use this music as a remedy try the vice versa. If sad, listen to joyful chirpy music and see how it elevates your mood. Loads of work - switch on some favourite music and work would be done with ease. Whatever I said so far must have been known to many. However, this topic came to my mind...

Similarity in dissimilarity

Image
Living beings or things can be dissimilar but when looked by just changing our angle of view a bit, it can be said without doubt that everything has some similarity, at least within a class.  Starting with things, glasses or cups may come in different sizes, shapes, designs or colours - Dissimilar! However, the purpose - to hold or contain - Similar! This is true for living as well. A lion and a tiger - different sizes, colour, design - Dissimilar! Nature, diet, habitat - Similar! This was when we group in same types. What if we look at two different types. An elephant and a man. Dissimilarity - Many, however the life force - Similar! Let's talk about abstracts. The most powerful force - God. Names - Dissimilar. Teachings and values - Similar. Festivals - Dissimilar. Message of love, compassion, forgiveness, togetherness - Similar. This idea actually cropped up recently to me. It's the festive season, and like others, I too was returning from the market after my meagre purch...

Simplicity

Image
Simplicity is of course a virtue. Undoubtedly, if adopted would save us a lot of time, energy, money and chaos. It is a value that has been believed to be hoarded by great people. True it may be, but when I personally look into the generations just before mine, I find out that there wasn't any lack of this great virtue even in places that do not demand high ranks for itself. I remember the probiotic meal that everyone is talking today is actually a product of simple living in houses of Kerala. I have seen my grandmother and my mother preparing it simply not even knowing that one day it would be in the menus of the stars of the society. The staple food of Kerala is rice to be more specific boiled rice. There was no custom of preparing the exact quantity of rice required for a family, in those days joint family. The concept is to have at least enough rice for an unexpected guest or passerby who drops in meal time. He could be served the rice with curd and pickle at least and both a...

Action and Reaction

Image
Newton's third law of motion states that for every action there will be an equal and opposite reaction. We all have studied this in our science class at school. At that time few of us might have known that this law is philosophical as well.  Over the years, in experience and observation, I have understood that this is so true. Most of the arguments and disagreements are more due to the reaction than the action itself. There are categories of people who initiate an argument just wishing a reaction from others around them. The reaction is what gives them the adrenaline rush and boost especially if the reaction is opposite. I have heard many spiritual leaders also advising to control the reaction. It is understood that we cannot control other people's actions. However, our reaction to it is definitely in our control. If we analyse any situation that ended in an argument or disagreement, we shall know that if the action of a certain person was to be blamed, the reaction was equa...

Handwriting

Image
Handwriting - not only a way to  communicate but also an art. Various forms, types, styles and variations of it. It was also an important aspect of education. Now, this was the era when education and educators had a significant importance in society. A time when understanding prevailed. Even in a simple thing like handwriting too, it was expected that it must be written in a way where people can understand and interpret your writing. Good handwriting was something emphasized by everyone.  But times have changed. Being in the education sector, I have seen the graph - and unfortunately it has gone downwards. Handwriting is now something where no one wishes to put efforts. If you have a good one, fine but if not, nothing much will be done about it. It wasn't so in our school days. Efforts were taken and ensured that the handwriting must be good. If you travel a generation still backwards, the handwriting would surprise you. Ask your grandparents or some septuagenarian to write a ...

Telephone

Image
The name- 'Telephone' rings a bell always. For me, it's a personal and emotional affair. Do not mistake - I am not referring to the cool, extra-modern, extravagant counterpart - the mobile. No doubt, mobiles are way ahead of my humble telephone but I owe my heart to the telephone. Back in the 80s, when this humble thing paved its way into the field of communication, the society was filled with happiness and awe. Its functionality, it's quickness, it's ability to actually make you listen to the voice of your loved ones - everything filled people's minds and hearts with unbelievable joy.  This was the era of Doordarshan, refrigerator and now the telephone - mind well - all are luxury items. The whole society with a house of 60 would have hardly one telephone and one fridge and one television but are available for everyone for use. The cricket matches, serials like Mahabharat and Ramayan, etc would have the drawing room of the television owner filled with audience....
