Similarity in dissimilarity

 

Living beings or things can be dissimilar but when looked by just changing our angle of view a bit, it can be said without doubt that everything has some similarity, at least within a class. 

Starting with things, glasses or cups may come in different sizes, shapes, designs or colours - Dissimilar! However, the purpose - to hold or contain - Similar! This is true for living as well. A lion and a tiger - different sizes, colour, design - Dissimilar! Nature, diet, habitat - Similar!

This was when we group in same types. What if we look at two different types. An elephant and a man. Dissimilarity - Many, however the life force - Similar!

Let's talk about abstracts. The most powerful force - God. Names - Dissimilar. Teachings and values - Similar. Festivals - Dissimilar. Message of love, compassion, forgiveness, togetherness - Similar.

This idea actually cropped up recently to me. It's the festive season, and like others, I too was returning from the market after my meagre purchase (as compared to many) of goodies. After the little shopping spree, it was late, and we were driving home. On my way back, I see the day is over and the hustle and bustle of night  that's different than of day has began. I see families on the sides of roads cooking food that is the something like the regular Chappati. ('Rotla' as they call it in Gujarat made of Maize, Bajra, or corn. It's quite thick as compared to the Chappati). Their hard day is over, and it's time for them to eat something not for taste or enjoyment but to satiate their hunger - which though forgotten is the purpose of food. It wouldn't have a great dish to go with. Could be just an onion or a green chilly or some simple vegetable. However, I wasn't there long enough to see that. This is a scene I have seen multiple times.

So, the majority of the city or place is celebrating with different kinds of food in plates - Similar, there is someone who is dissimilarly eating a similar food day in and day out. I was wondering how do I categorise this group - Similar or Dissimilar? If similar, then to whom? If dissimilar, then to what?

Irony of life, but let's not close on a sad note during the festive season. Let's pray to God to be kind to everyone and forgive the sins for which they might be suffering and also thank Him for the lives he has blessed with his mercy.
